Athens — CARROLL SPRINGS- Memorial services for Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Sandra J. Penney, 71, of Carroll Springs are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Sept. 7, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Cross Roads with the Rev. Frank Upchurch and the Rev. Jim Allen officiating.

Burial of cremains with full military honors is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, at Becks Chapel Cemetery.

Sgt. Penney was born April 22, 1942 to the late Clifton Alton and Josie Mae Sparks Penney.

While in the Army, Sgt. Penney served as a Medical Specialist, a Medic, then became a Practical Nurse (Vocational Nurse). She received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army service ribbon, Overseas service medal, Army Commendation Medal, non-commissioned officer professional Development Ribbon.  While overseas she served in Japan.

After retirement, she worked as an Insurance Claims Examiner for Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 17 years.

Preceeding her in death are her parents, uncle and stepfather, Clyde Penney, daughter, Cathy L. Wheeler, 2007, brother, Clifton Penney, Jr., baby sister, Glenda Sue Penney.

Survivors include daughter, Becky R. Willie, Garland, sons, Michael W. Allen, Plano, Roger Dale Allen, Dallas, son-in-law, Roy Wheeler, Eustace, sisters, Shirley Anderton, Carroll Springs, Maryann Timmons, Carroll Springs, aunt, Beth Tanner, Farmers Branch, Lera Penney, Athens, grandchildren, Nicole Wheeler, Tiphannie Clements, Bill Wolfenberger, Jennifer Willie, Heather Walker, Robin Allen, Amanda Allen, Mitchell Allen, Courtni Allen and Holly Allen.
