Retired MSG Thomas L. Rains passed away peacefully at his home in Athens with his loving family around him on Tuesday, October 16, 2012. He was born in Mesquite, Texas on July 11, 1943. He was a direct descendant of the original family of Rains County. He served his country as a second generation in the Army for 20 years. He met his wife, Linda, of 44 years in 1968. He became a third degree Mason in Leghorn, Italy. After retiring from the Army he worked for the National Archives Center in Washington, D.C. for 10 years until moving to Athens, Texas to stay. He then worked for Vartec Telecom in Dallas for another 10 years. He is survived by his wife Linda, his daughter and son-in-law Gail Marie and Troy Mouser of Athens, his sons Michael and Katka Rains of San Antonio, and James and Tabitha Rains of Rusk. His sister Sheran Dixon of Quinlan, brothers Ronnie and Joyce Rains of Allen, Richard and Linda Rains of Mesquite, his Uncle David and Aunt Irene Graham of Mesquite, his four grandchildren; Madelaine, Nicholas, Eileen, and Christina, two great grandchildren; Richard and Gregory, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Louis E. Rains of Arkansas, his mother Lucille Rains of Mesquite, and grandparents Dewey and Carma Graham of Mesquite. On October 25, 2012, at 2:00 pm, there will be a graveside service at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX . The family wishes that in lieu of flowers that donations be made in Thomas’ name to MD Anderson www.mdanderson.org. Expressions of sympathy can be sent to 8025 CR 3715, Athens, TX 75752.
