Spencer Nelson

Athens — Spencer Nelson, 54, passed away Monday, April 1, 2013, in Bowie.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, in the Drawing Room of the White Family Funeral Home with Joe Caballero officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of Rural Texas.

Arrangements are entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home of Bowie.

Nelson was born Dec. 26, 1958 to Arnold and Flossie (Mueller) Nelson in Bowie. Spencer and Nancy began their lives together on May 29, 1982. Beginning in 1984, Spencer owned and operated a trucking business, H & H Trucking. In 2000, he started S & N Trucking, and was also a partner in North Central Tank Truck Company.  Spencer was a master mechanic and an avid racecar fan. He also owned and operated Cripple Creek Game Club in Oklahoma, where he raised and fought game cocks. Spencer enjoyed going to auctions and fishing, and is remembered with love and appreciation of his devoted years of life as a husband, father and grandfather. 

He is preceded in death by parents, Arnold and Flossie Nelson; foster parents, Art and Irene Hawkins; daughter, Valarie Ann Price; granddaughter, Katlin Elizabeth Nelson; three brothers, Darrell Nelson, James Nelson and Art Hawkins, Jr.; sister, Debra Curnutte; father-in-law, Creo Summit; and brother-in-law, Hoyle Graham.

Spencer is survived by his wife and partner of 31 years, Nancy Price Nelson of Sunset; three children, Josh Polk and wife, Leigh Ann of Montague, Jimi Chris Nelson of Oklahoma, and Judy Hawkins of Bowie; two brothers, Art Nelson and wife, Vicki of Spring Dale, Ark. and Robert Hawkins and wife, Patti of Bowie; four sisters, Patricia Cleveland-Dixon and husband, Hank of Bowie, Debbie Graham of Marietta, Okla., Kathy Valdez and husband, Tommy of Cabot, Ark., and Sarah Hawkins of Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Layla Polk, Jamie Lawler, Casey Alford, and Tonee Curnutte, and Trafton Morgan; two great-grandchildren, Julia Lawler and Wilder Alford; mother-in-law, Dorathy Summit; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Pam Stinson of Poynor, Johnny and Beth Summit of Keller, and Jimmy and Dee Rivers of Richardson; numerous nieces and nephews; special angels, Jemae Hawkins, Darla Curnutte, Sondy Medley, JoAnn and J.B. Jordon, and the girls at Bowie Memorial Hospital; special friends, Darrell Curnutte, Junior Ingram, Doug Nolan, Dennis Barnes and Harvey Thronberry.
