Alan Farmin Hoglin

Alan Farmin Hoglin, 78, of Mabank, died Monday, June 19, 2006, in Mabank. No services are scheduled.

Mr. Hoglin was born Feb. 18, 1928, in Dearborn, Mich.



Dr. Jerry F. Dawson

Dr. Jerry F. Dawson, former President of East Texas Baptist University, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2006, after a long battle with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Dr. Dawson was born in Borger to Frank and Nell Lena Gibson Dawson on December 28, 1933. He graduated from Borger High School in 1952 and surrendered his life to the Christian ministry while a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Borger. He married his high school sweetheart, Margie Jo Clements, in 1952 and they have celebrated their life in ministry together for nearly 54 years.

Dr. Dawson earned his BA degree with special distinction from Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., in 1956. His education continued as he earned his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Modern European History at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Dawson also received honorary doctoral degrees from both the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Dallas Baptist University, where he served as interim Chief Executive Officer from 1987-1988.

During a preaching and pastoral ministry of fifty years, Dr. Dawson pastored churches in both Mississippi and Texas and served as the interim pastor of 80 churches in Texas between the years 1960 and 2000, including the International Baptist Church of Stuttgart, Germany, in 1988. Dr. Dawson was a member of the Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Ft. Worth.

Dr. Dawson’s career in education spanned four decades beginning in 1961 at Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, where he was head of the History Department. In 1968 he joined the faculty of Texas A&M; University, and in 1971 became Dean of the Graduate School and Professor of History at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. From 1976 until 1985, Dr. Dawson served as president of East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. From 1985 until his retirement in 1997, he was the Director of the Christian Education Coordinating Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. His family is proud of his many accomplishments and publications, including Elmer and The Peas and Other Dawsonisms and Pray Without Kidding.
