John William Boykin

Athens — LaRue-Services for John William Boykin, 91, LaRue are scheduled for 2 p .m., Friday in New York Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Thomas officiating.

Burial will follow in Myrtle Springs Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home, Athens.

Mr. Boykin died Oct. 1, 2013 at home.

He was born Sept. 25, 1922 in Engles, Ark. to the late Henry L. and Susie Jane Brown Boykin.

John resided in Pasadena from 1954 until 1958, then moved to Channelview. He served a 30-year tenure with Armco Steel before retiring in 1983 as Bricklayer Foreman. He moved to LaRue in 1983 and became an active member of New York Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with tours in Central Europe. He was a member and former commander of the American Legion in Channelview and coached American Legion baseball and Little League.

John was passionate about gardening, especially raising vegetables and sharing the harvest with friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by: a son Doyce Wayne Boykin, Oct. 20, 1991; brother Cecil Boykin; sisters, Virginia Ford, Aylene Fitcher, Sara Mae Jackson and Elizabeth Lewis.

Survivors include: his wife of 62 years, Ann Ruth Boykin, LaRue; sons, Bobby Boykin and wife Kathie, Malakoff, Richard Boykin and wife Floyce, Pine Bluff Ark.; brother, Pete Boykin, Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Debbie Jonio, David Boykin, Candace Boykin, Brandie Boykin, Jesse Scott, Jeremy Scott; great-grandchildren, Ashley Jonio, Balegh Boykin, Hunter Boykin, Matt Boykin, Keyan Boykin, Kylie Wilson, Violet Wilson, Colbie Madison, Colt Boykin and Olivia Boykin.

Nephews and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will include Elton Gracie, Carl Richardson, Billy Jack Reynolds, Seabrem Tindel, Lanny Reynolds, Dewey Reynolds and Marvin Holcomb.

Visitation for family and friends will be 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
