Athens —
After a long battle with congestive heart failure, Lance LaRue West passed from this life to eternal life (thanks be to Christ) on Nov. 10, 2012, in Sweden, where he has lived for many years.
His burial took place in the village churchyard of Stenberga, Sweden.
Lance was born in Jacksonville, on Feb. 13, 1951, the son of V.E. and Betty LaRue West.
He grew up in Athens, and graduated from Athens High School in 1968. Before graduation, he attended The Miller School of Albemarle in Virginia, and the Congressional Page School in The Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. while he served as a U.S. Congressional Page in 1966. During his early teen years he became an Eagle Scout and also earned scouting's God & Country Award, for which he always gave due credit for these cherished achievements to this mother's great encouragement.
After graduating from West Texas A&M University in 1973, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Lance took a job in Australia for the next two years. After leaving there, he continued his travels westward visiting many countries along the way as he circled the globe before his return to Texas in late 1975. The following year, he moved to Dallas, and began a career in the real estate development business, which he ended in 1991 as a Vice President after 13 years with the Folsom Companies Investment Group.
Soon after, together with his Swedish-born wife, they moved to her native Sweden to live in a 19th century vicarage purchased from the Church of Sweden in the small rural village of Stenberga.
Regardless of where he was in the world, Lance always thought of Athens as "home." He gave credit for anything good to his parents, and was grateful for all blessings of any size, the greatest of which was his coming to know Christ Jesus as his personal Savior.
It was said by some that Lance was "born with a silver spoon in his mouth." He can assure those people that he took nothing with him when he left this world. He leaves all reading this with something to think about which Jesus Himself said: John 3:1-18.
He was preceded in death by parents Y.E. "Chick" West and Betty LaRue West Walker, sister Adele Laird West, sister Shannon West Murchison and brother Mark Van Deln West.
He is survived by Eva Garming (West), Stenberga, Sweden; sisters Barbara West Farley, Waverly West Burford, Wynne West Anderson, Shelly West Bowman and Shawn West Webb; nieces Catherine Coleman "Coco" Murchison and Tuesday Kathryn West; nephews Derek Baumgarten, Colonel Longstreet Brashier and Ash Cameron Anderson.
