ATHENS-Joe Dan Donnell was born July 17, 1939 in the Walnut Creek Community of Athens, and went to our Father in Heaven on Dec. 4, 2012 in Athens.
Joe Dan attended Athens Elementary School before moving to Houston in 1949, where he later graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1957. Joe Dan graduated from Houston Technical College in 1962. He was a professional precision machinist in Houston over 45 years, and owned B & J Machine Service, Inc., a company specializing in custom machine parts for the aerospace and oil and gas industries.
A highlight of his career was machining the flag pole that was placed on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission for NASA in 1969.
Joe Dan was a loving father and a quiet man. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling to experience new places albeit he was terrified of flying. After retirement in 2004, Joe Dan moved back to Athens, where he was a member of Crescent Heights United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife Bettye Jo Donnell; mother Vallie Mae Brownlow Donnell and father Clyde A. Donnell; sisters Caroline Donnell O’Reilly and Doris Donnell Coleman.
He is survived by daughters Denise Donnell McKinnon, Montana, Danna Donnell, Texas, Delaine Donnell Koonce, Florida and brother, Royce Glenn Donnell, Athens. Other survivors include two grandsons, Travis and Cody Roberts, Arizona, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 10, 2012 at Crescent Heights United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Palmer officiating. Interment will follow at Walnut Creek Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Jimmy Glasgow, Rick Gunnels, L. V. McDaniel, Cabot O’Reilly, Robert Tisdale and Lee Roy Wilson.
