Donald Nelson Jordan

ATHENS — Donald Nelson Jordan, 75, following a short illness, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2013 in San Antonio.  He was born in Mabank on Oct. 22, 1937 to parents Roland and Beulah Jordan.

Although the family moved several times during his early youth, Don was proud to call Malakoff his hometown.  A graduate of Malakoff High in 1956, he excelled in sports and other school activities. He was Most Athletic Senior, awarded the John G. Honey Memorial Award in 1967 as Outstanding Athlete of Malakoff High School 1955-56 and was recently inducted into the Malakoff Sports Hall of Fame.  Although he was successful in his career, he never forgot the roots of his raising.

Don earned a football scholarship to William M. Rice Institute (University).  Several knee surgeries ended his playing career and he served as a Manager of the Football Team.  He was a 1960 graduate of the last class of Rice “Institute” with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Physical Education.  He remained a loyal supporter of Rice University, and cherished his friendships and memories from Rice.

On June 6, 1960 he began his career in Fire & Casualty Insurance as a Fieldman with American General Insurance of Houston.  After three moves in one year, San Antonio became his home in 1962.  Don became Branch Manager in San Antonio of Maryland American General Insurance Co. where he trained many young agents who became successful in the industry.

He was selected Boss of the Year in 1971 by the Insurance Women of San Antonio.  In 1971, he was elected Secretary of Maryland American General & National Standard Insurance Companies.  He joined Catto & Catto Insurance Agency as a partner in 1972 and retired in 2009. He earned his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation in 1974. He was President of the Independent Insurance Agents of San Antonio in 1977.

During his 49 years in the insurance industry, he made many lifelong friends of fellow employees and customers. His favorite pastimes were spent listening to Merle Haggard, spending time with family and friends, golfing, hunting, fishing and trading stories of the past.  He was a founder and director of Stone Oak National Bank, now part of IBC.  Other favorites were sitting in his swing on the porch of his vacation home in Ruidoso, N.M. watching the wildlife, and traveling the world, where his favorites were Australia, Scandinavia, Kenya and Antarctic.

In 1958, Don met his future wife, Sharlene Johnson, in Houston.  They were married May 29, 1960 in Artesia, N.M.  He was a very proud father of son, Don, Jr. and daughter, Janice.  He enjoyed and supported their activities and friends.  He became a TTU Red Raider dad and supporter.

Don was preceded in death by: his son, Donald N. Jordan, Jr.; his daughter, Janice Helen Jordan; parents Roland and Beulah Jordan; brothers Royce and Bobby Lynn Jordan; brother-in-law Mike Giles; niece Beth Stanfield.

Donald is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Sharlene; brothers, Marcus and wife, Becky, Edward and wife, Lonnelle; brothers-in-law, Wilbur Johnson and wife, Pat, and Jerry Johnson; sister-in-law, Peggy Jordan; nephews Richard Jordan, Kevin Jordan, Robert Jordan, Rick Johnson, and Justin Johnson; nieces Ann Elizabeth Cargil, Dianna Crouch, Sharley Cimini, Tammy Ramsey and Stephanie Brown; uncles and aunts, Kenneth Jordan and wife, Maxine, Eugenia Jordan and Isham Johnson and wife, Billie; Belly’s Angels, Lori DeHoyos, Jackie Sorenson and Kim Szekely; Godchildren, Mark Lee, Reid Lee and Ashley Sorenson.
