James Winburn Lawton went to be with His Lord and Savior on Friday, January 3, 2014 at the age of 84.
Jim was born on December 11, 1929 in Monroe, Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Ione Lawton, and his brother, A.C. Lawton.
Jim is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Hounsel Lawton; his daughter Becky Wells and her husband Mark; daughter Kathy Kirk and her husband Kendall; his son Mark Lawton and his wife Cyndi; his grandchildren Brandon, Paige, Andrew and Jennifer Kirk, Callie and Lindsey Lawton; his great-grandsons, Ian and Jacob Kirk; his brothers Gil Lawton and Bob Lawton; his sister Yvonne Wagner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Louisiana State University and earned his Masters of Divinity from Southern Methodist University. He pastored churches in Westlake, Zwolle, Gonzales, Dubach, and Alexandria, Louisiana.
Jim went on to earn his Masters in Biology from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and moved his family to Denton, Texas.
He worked at Vought Aerospace as a quality control engineer until retirement, when he and Betty moved to Athens and enjoyed a slower pace of life and made many friends.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, January 19 at 2:00 pm at the East Texas Arboretum.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Arboretum in his honor.
