Thomas Henry Lyon

Athens — Services for Thomas H. Lyon of Payne Springs will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 at The First Baptist Church of Malakoff with the Rev. Jody Jones officiating.  Interment and a graveside service will follow at the Hilltop Cemetery in Carrollton with the Rev. Gene McBride officiating. 

Thomas was born on Oct. 5, 1938 in Durham, N.C. to parents Doyett Henry Lyon and Pauline (Stem) Lyon, and passed quietly in his sleep on Jan. 14, 2014 at the age of 75.  Thomas dedicated his life to his church, his family, his community and his business.  He brought love, integrity and generosity to all aspects of his life. 

He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Math (Industrial Engineering) from N.C. State University in 1961.  He worked in the paper and recycling industry for most of his career.  He eventually started his own recycling and brokerage business in Texas and Louisiana. 

He and his wife Estella established Jake’s Skate Park in Malakoff as a spiritual outreach to local youth.  Many youth have participated in, and had their lives changed by the skate competitions.  At various times in his life, he brought his unique leadership style to his church, his business, his community, and even the Boy Scouts (Eagle Scout and adult leader).  Thomas was a member of the First Baptist Church in Malakoff. 

Thomas enjoyed golf.  He and Estella travelled regularly in their RV.  They were members of the Cedar Creek Lakers RV Club.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, son Jake Ward and sister Mary Lyon.

He is survived by: his wife Estella Lyon; sons  Thomas H. Lyon Jr., and wife Nicole of San Diego, Calif., James D. Lyonfields and wife Shawna L. Lyonfields of St. Louis, Mo., David P. Lyon and wife Debbie Lyon of Quinlan, Randall Ward of Dallas; and grandchildren Aja D. Lyonfields, Jacob D. Lyonfields, Thomas A. Lyonfields, Thomas Maxwell Lyon and McKenzie P. Lyon.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the First Baptist Church of Malakoff in support of Jake’s Skate Park Missions, 220 West Mitchum, Malakoff, TX  75156.
