Athens —
Loretta “Lorie” Tackett Watkins of Ravenna went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012 after a short illness. Lorie was 55 years young, born in Athens and grew up in LaRue. She attended LaPoynor Schools, graduating as Salutatorian of the Class of 1976. Lorie was already taking college classes while a junior in high school and soon received a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from El Centro College in Dallas, earning her RN. Lorie worked for several North Texas hospitals including VA Hospital in Bonham, an opportunity to “give back” according to Lorie.
Lorie loved all animals, active in wildlife conservation, and was an avid horseback rider, winning the Queens contest of the Henderson County Livestock Show, as well as Queen of the Tops in Texas PRCA Rodeo in Jacksonville. Lorie’s nursing skills extended beyond humans, as she adopted several orphaned animals, including wild animals. Her most notable accomplishment being a wild, orphaned and injured Bobcat she nursed back to health, running loose in her house, toilet trained, all the while keeping the Bobcat’s “wild instincts” for her eventual return back to nature.
Lori is survived by her husband of nine years, Tommy Watkins, Ravenna, son Jason Shaw and wife Jamie, Fate, daughter Melissa Wiley and husband Dr. Casey Wiley, San Antonio, stepson Michael Watkins, Ector, stepdaughter Misty Smith, Vancouver, Wash., parents Wyndel and Willetta Tackett, Athens, sister Di Ann Tackett Roberts and husband Don, Plano, brother Steve Tackett and wife Di Ann, LaRue, brother Lee Tackett and wife Kim, Athens, numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, as well as many friends.
Pallbearers are Buck Bingham, Mike Watkins, Randy Wilhelm, Bo Barber, Bo Nelms and Chris Curd.
Services for Lori are scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday in Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Perry Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park.
Visitation for family and friends will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to National Wild Turkey Federation-Women in the Outdoors, P. O. Box 530, Edgefield, SC 29824.
You may leave a message of condolence or light a memorial candle for the family at www.carroll-lehr.com.
