James King Gremillion

Athens — James King Gremillion (King), 66, passed away Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010 at his home in Athens of a heart attack. Visitation will be at 2-3 p.m. on Wednesday Dec. 22, 2010 at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home (Athens, Texas). At 3 p.m. following visitation, there will be an informal service where family and friends will share about King and his life.  All those who knew King are encouraged to participate.

A visitation and service will also be held at Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City on Tuesday Dec. 28, 2010 starting at 4 p.m.

James King Gremillion (King) was born Feb. 9, 1944 to Charles Paxton and Inez Dorsett Gremillion in Galveston. He loved raising animals, and in his youth helped his uncle King Dorsett run cattle on their land in Texas City. He was in the Marine Reserves from 1965 to 1971, and in 1966 King married Vicki Van Houten. From 1974 to 1979, he managed a cattle ranch in Wiggins, Miss.

In 1979, he moved his family to a beautiful home in the country outside of Athens, and founded L'atelier Gremillion, a fine arts and antiques restoration shop, where he became a dedicated and talented craftsman.

At L'atelier, he collaborated with his brother Paxton of Loyd-Paxton Inc. and other clients to restore and preserve, with the help of his wife Vicki and his son King, many fine pieces of art that will live on for many hundreds if not thousands of years more because of his dedication and expertise.

He had the honor to work with many talented craftsmen whom he respected, including machinist Lloyd Wilson of Athens, Noles Davis Antique Restoration of Dallas and Dave Repka and Gabe Salas of Dallas.

He delighted in the unique, the different and the uncommon, was trusting and personable, and had an incomparably handsome, mischievous smile. King loved to revel in stories of his younger years when he ran around getting into trouble with his good friends Ossie Matthews, David Dunn, Joe Evans, Mike Gilbert and Gilbert Gustafson (and many more). He was passionate, defiant and noble, loved his family deeply and cherished the time he could spend with his granddaughter Cleo. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife Victoria (Vicki) Van Houten Gremillion, children Tiffany Michele Gremillion of Santa Fe, N.M., King Dorsett Gremillion of Athens, John-Paxton Gremillion of Austin, granddaughter Cleo Esme Gremillion,  brother Charles Paxton Gremillion and partner Loyd Taylor of Dallas, and sister Dorothy Anne Gremillion and husband John Gayle of Shreveport, La., brother-in-law John Van Houten of Taos, N.M., sister-in-law Beckie Van Houten of San Diego Calif., sister-in-law Abigail Dan of Rochester, N.Y., and cousins John Curtis Trahan of Albuquerque, N.M. and William Dorsett Trahan of Topeka, Kans.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Paxton Gremillion and mother, Dulcie Inez Dorsett Gremillion, and brother, Harry (Hank) Dorsett Gremillion.

If you wish, in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of the professionals at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens.
