Vesper Lorene Layfield
ATHENS-Graveside services and interment for Vesper Lorene Layfield are scheduled for 10:00 A M Wednesday at Prairie Point Cemetery with Lavelle Layfield officiating.
Vesper passed away Monday, July 7, 2014 in Fort Worth at the age of 91 years young.
She was born March 26, 1923 in Kerens to the late Wilson W. and Thena Mae Tramel Taylor. Vesper grew up in the community of Bazette. As a young girl she loved riding her horses and attending dances in the Wilson Community where she attended school. She later attended Kerens High School where she played girls basketball. She graduated with the class of 1938 at the age of 15. Vesper married Doyle Layfield August 24, 1940 in Corsicana. They lived in Kerens and Topeka, Kansas while Doyle was stationed at Fort Riley during his World War II military service. Upon his discharge from the U S Army in 1946 they moved to Seminole then to Athens in 1947. Vesper was a dedicated homemaker all her life. She meticulously attended to the needs of her family. She loved to cook and sew. Vesper was an excellent seamstress making all the clothes for her two daughters. She enjoyed quilting and made each grandchild a quilt. She was a perfectionist in her housekeeping and tending her yard. In later years she enjoyed working crossword puzzles and watching the Texas Rangers. She liked country music and especially Conway Twitty and Marty Robbins. Vesper was a member of Eastern Hills Church of Christ. She participated in Ladies Bible Class, Meals of Kindness, singing and serving ice cream to the residents of South Place Nursing Center. She regularly visited all the nursing homes in Athens. She busily worked with her hands. She had the heart of a servant.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years Doyle Layfield in 1986; brothers Jasper Kimbrough, Clarence Taylor, Gilroy Taylor, sisters Lena Kimbrough Huff and Eunice Taylor Domorad; great granddaughter Ella Stukas.
Survivors include her daughters Tommie Cook and husband Harold of Athens, Helen Grimes and husband Royce of Benbrook; grandchildren Shelley and Rob Stukas of Athens, Angela and Chris Klattenhoff of Dallas, Russell and Brittany Boone of Durango, Colorado and Shawn and Clint Cooper of Calhoun, Louisiana; great grandchildren Jason and Courtney Stukas of Midlothian, Whitney and Pete Vasquez of Athens, Andrew Stukas of Athens, Sara and Sophia Klattenhoff of Dallas and Dorothy Boone of Durango, Colorado; great great grandchildren Brock, Brant, Allie and Lilly Stukas all of Midlothian, Nathaniel Quintero of Athens, Yvette Vasquez of Dallas and Peter Kerbow of Athens.
Vesper’s family would like to extend special thanks to Arden Courts Alzheimers Assisted Living in Arlington where their mother and grandmother “Gigi” had resided the past two years. Your tender and loving care of her is greatly appreciated.
