Durward Owen Carter was born in Athens on Jan. 2, 1934 to parents, Arthur Dalton Carter and Ruth Elena Cochran Carter. Both parents precede him in death, as well as his son, Mark McCarley. Mr. Carter passed away peacefully on Feb. 2, 2013.
Durward was a loving brother to seven sisters and five brothers of which eight have preceded him in death. Mr. Carter leaves behind two brothers; A.D. Carter, Jr. of Athens and Howard Carter of Nacogdoches, and two sisters, Bess Philbrick and Jean Turner both of Athens. In addition, many loving nieces and nephews have stood by his side and mourn his passing.
Durward attended Athens High School, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1951, where he served honorably for over 22 years. He served in both the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict.
On Aug. 16, 1969, Durward married his soul mate, Shirley Ruth Brasher. They were inseparable throughout their married life. He was a devoted husband and companion to Shirley for over 43 years.
Durward was father to Mike and Mark McCarley. Mr. Carter leaves behind one son, three loving grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. His love and devotion to his family was extraordinary. All that knew him were blessed by the example he lived, and the love and respect he shared for all.
Memorial services will be Feb. 13, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Post Oak Cemetery in Malakoff, with the Rev. Susie Barton presiding. A military honor guard will honor the service of this veteran.
