Kathleen Breard Byrne

Athens — Kathleen Breard Byrne of Dallas died peacefully on Jan. 14, 2013.

She was born Oct. 9, 1911, on a farm near Bernice, La.  She was the last surviving sibling of 12 children born to Sarah Frances Andrews and Joseph Douglas Harrell.

As Valedictorian of her high school class she earned a scholarship to LSU, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, and met her first husband Jack H. Breard.  She and Jack married in 1934, and moved to Dallas in 1936.  After Jack’s death in 1960, Kathleen married H. Muse Womack of Daytona Beach, Fla. in 1963.

Muse died suddenly in 1965, and she returned from Florida to Dallas where she met H. Thomas Byrne. They married Jan. 19, 1969.  Kathleen and Tom moved to Taos, N.M. in 1974, and built a beautiful adobe home by an arroyo outside of town, and made many lifelong friends.

They moved to Athens in 1986, where they were active in the Athens community.  Kathleen volunteered at the Athens Hospital until age 90.  In 2002, they moved to Dallas, and have resided at Edgemere in recent years.

Kathleen was beautiful both inside and out.  She was a woman of deep faith, and read the Bible daily. She loved her family and friends, babies, reading, architecture and design and travel. She also loved to cook, and her boiled caramel icing was renowned.

She was not a morning person, but was known to get up at dawn to go fishing.

She is survived by her beloved husband Tom, children Jack Breard (Barbara), Mike Breard (Angela), Nancy Shelton (Jim), Ben Breard (Janice) and step-children Tom Byrne (Laurel), Tim Byrne (Melanie), Kevin Byrne (Jeanne), Brian Byrne (Marla), Sean Byrne (Jere), Terence Byrne (Margaret), 28 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

She is also survived by brother-in-law Reneau Breard (Anne), sister-in-law Mary Edith Breard Hayes and brother-in-law Charles Byrne (Jo), as well as numerous nephews, nieces and other family members.

One step-daughter, Maureen Byrne Valentine, predeceased her.

The family especially thanks Dr. Stuart Owen for his devoted care.  A memorial service will be held at Ellis Chapel, Park Cities Baptist Church, Jan. 24, 2013 at 2:30 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Retina Foundation of the Southwest, 9900 N. Central Expressway, Dallas, TX 75231, Park Cities Baptist Church, 3933 Northwest Parkway, Dallas, TX 75225, or to the charity of your choice.
