Athens —
Athens-Graveside services and interment for Eleanor Doris Clay Oliver, 83, of Dripping Springs formerly of Athens have been scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 at Malakoff City Cemetery with the Rev. Richard Palmer officiating.
Mrs. Oliver left this world for the next on Sunday Jan. 6, 2013 in Dripping Springs.
She was born Feb. 15, 1929 in Malakoff, the only daughter of the late Jessie “Preacher” and Eunice Clay.
She had resided in Dripping Springs for the last eight years. While traveling around the world with her family in support of her husband’s Air Force career, she was always active in her community. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Protestant Women of the Chapel and was a Girl Scout Leader. She was active in her church teaching Sunday School for many years.
While she taught school, she furthered her education to expand her skills. By the end of her long career, she had earned her Master’s degree, and was working with the special needs and blind children. She enjoyed playing “42” and dominos, bowling, sightseeing and collecting things such as her clowns. Her travels not only took her to far-reaching places, but also through history.
She went to Berlin in the early days when the wall was being built in the 1960s, and to Okinawa in the 1980s after it was returned to Japan from World War II. This fostered an appreciation for history, which she used to persue her own family heritage, and to aide historical societies such as Smith Cemetery, the UDC and the Historical Society.
A loving mother, she was known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as “Granny.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Oliver, brothers, James Leon Clay, Thomas Clay and Jerry Clay.
Survivors include her daughter Carol Griffith and her husband Roger, Dripping Springs, grandchildren, Lee Griffith and wife Tina of Pflugerville, Tracy Finkbeiner and husband John, Tomball, great-grandchildren Samantha Finkbeiner, Cody Finkbeiner and Brandon Griffith, brother, Alton “Pete” Clay, Tyler, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 from 10 a.m. to noon at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
