Athens — Memorial services for Thomas Baker, Jr., 88, were conducted in Lewisville on July 16, 2013.  Burial was in the U.S. Veterans National Cemetery in Mesa, Ariz. on July 20.  He was a native Athenian and attended Athens High School, where he was a quarterback for the Athens Hornets.

He later attended Abilene Christian College, and became a faithful gospel preacher for the Church of Christ, and served as such for 65 years, preaching in Texas, California and Arizona.  He retired in 2012 while serving at the West Side Church of Christ in Phoenix.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dee Dee Baker; his daughter, Jo Ann Baker both of Highland Village; and two sons, David and John who reside in Phoenix, Ariz.  He is also survived by a brother, James Baker of Mobile, Ala. and a sister, Jean Baker Holland, wife of Judge Jack Holland of Athens and several grandchildren.
