Robert Thomas Partain

Athens — Partain, Robert Thomas (Tom), PhD., 89, of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Tyler,  crossed over Friday, July 12, 2013. Dr. Partain was a member of Farragut Presbyterian Church. He was a business author and educator of national stature.

He held a Doctorate of Finance from the University of Texas in Austin, where he also taught in the School of Business Administration.  He previously served as the Dean of the Business School at the University of Texas at Tyler.

Prior to joining UT Tyler, Partain served as the Professor of Business Administration and Chairman of the Finance Department of the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business Administration at the University of Richmond, Virginia's largest private University.

Partain was chosen for the Virginia Bankers Association's Distinguished Chair of Banking at the University of Virginia. Dr. Partain also served as a member of the United States Congressional Advisory Board.

A native Texan, Partain was a U.S. Naval Aviator during World War II. He trained young pilots in preparation for flying combat aircraft and was rated for Hellcats, Avengers and PBY flying boats.

He had a record of community involvement, including leadership in the Boy Scouts of America where he was awarded The Order of The Arrow.  The cigar-chewing, avid fisherman is fondly remembered for his love of teaching, people, laughing and singing.  The largeness of his persona will be missed.

Partain is survived by: his wife of 64 years, Joanna P. Partain; daughter, Betsy Clements and husband, Rod Clements; granddaughter, Whitney Clements; sister, Dorothy Partain Goodwin (Gerald); brother, Loyd Gene Partain (Annie); many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, July 19, 2013 at Farragut Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to University of Texas Alumni Association, P. O. Box 7278, Austin, TX 78713 or Farragut Presbyterian Church, 209 Jamestowne Blvd., Farragut, TN 37934.
