Melvin Dean Sims

Athens — Eustace - Recitation of the Rosary for Melvin Dean Sims, 78, of Eustace is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Friday, with visitation to follow from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Chapel in Athens.  Requiem Mass for the Repose of the Soul will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday at St. Edwards Catholic Church by Father Pancras Savarimuthu Celebrant.

Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Zwolle, La.

Melvin passed on to his real home Jan. 1, 2014 in the peace and quiet of his and Gloria’s home. He fought a hard battle with cancer since February, 2013. Hospice Care began Dec. 3, and he lapsed into a coma Christmas Day.

He was born Jan. 21, 1935 in Paragould, Ark. to George Madison and Dollie May Sims. They later lived in California.  Melvin came to Eustace in 1979, and became a famous legend in the poultry industry. He was an amazing mentor, and will always be remembered as a true southern gentleman-and he did it his way!

He is preceded in death by: his parents; sisters Nelma Sims, Opal Sims and Armelda Sims; brothers Tom Sims, J. B. Sims and Odell Sims; great-nephew Colby Lyn Sims.

Survivors are: his wife Gloria Sims, Eustace; son Keith Sims, Athens; daughters Pam Pearce and husband Jeff, Sallisaw, Okla., Patti Kier and husband John, Frisco, Melissa Sims, Allen; stepdaughters that Melvin loved as his own Penny Calhoun and husband Jermoy, Longview, Melanie Humphrey and husband Lex, Hallsville, Tammy Penix and husband Clint, Mabank, Laura Simpson and husband Robert, Zwolle, La.; 13 grandchildren; sister Tine Price, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Pauline Sims; a host of nieces, nephews and loyal friends.

Pallbearers will be Clint Penix, Adam Penix, Jeff Pearce, Blake Pearce, Lex Humphrey, Jeromy Calhoun and John Keir.

Honorary pallbearers will be Keith Sims, Danny Sims, Jerry Sims, Jowell Christian, Carl Dunn, Steven Newell and Bobby Markholt.
