Kaye M. Blew

Athens — ATHENS- Funeral services for Kaye M. Blew are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday at Eastern Hills Church of Christ with David Mahan and Dan Rogers officiating.

Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Services are under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.

Kaye M. Blew, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, left her earthly home Tuesday morning, Sept. 17, 2013 to enter her heavenly home. Kaye was a Christian who lived her faith. She loved life and possessed an adventurous and free spirit for 100 years.

Kaye was born Jan. 30, 1913 in Athens to the late William Rather and Jettie Bell McKay. She grew up during the depression years and picked cotton on the farm on weekends while boarding in town to attend Athens High School.

She graduated in 1931 and was a member of the girls’ state championship basketball team, The Hornet Lassies. After graduation she played on a semi-pro team in Dallas. She had the good fortune to land a job at both the Dallas Centennial and the Pan American Games, both held on the State Fairgrounds when jobs were difficult to find.

She married three times, the first to Charles Raymond Belding of Hot Springs, Ark., with whom she had three daughters, Robyn, Rayna and Judy. During their years together, she became a champion angler, one year catching the largest bass in the state. She learned to water ski and skied 36 miles on a slalom every morning until age 70.  She often skied as part of the entertainment during the local boat races in which Belding participated. Their dog Spot often rode the slalom with her.

During this time she began an annual tradition of putting on her bathing suit and making snow angels in the snow. She was a skilled seamstress and dressed all her girls with clothes made by her own hands through their school years. She loved cooking, gardening, fishing and feeding family, friends and neighbors. Kaye was a devoted wife to Raymond for 48 years.

After Raymond’s passing, her high school sweetheart from Athens drove almost weekly to Hot Springs carrying a pickup load of flowers, melons and whatever was in bloom during the season to court Ms. Kaye. She finally agreed to marry him on one condition-he had to go to church with her.

Kaye married Tom Hubbard on Christmas Eve in her daughter Judy’s home in St. Louis and moved back to Texas. Kaye and Tom enjoyed remodeling Mr. Tom’s old farmhouse, growing sunflowers and vegetables and the life offered by nature on the farm.

After Tom’s passing, Kaye met and married Jim Blew, a member of Eastern Hills Church of Christ. They were married a short two and one-half years, but Kaye would be the first to tell you, “She saved the best for last!”

During her years after Jim passed, she poured her passion into painting and became an art student at Charlie Bullock’s studio. One of her last paintings won a blue ribbon in this year’s HC Spring Art Show. Her fall tomatoes and onions were recently planted and her herb garden is flourishing outside the back door.

She is preceded in death by: her three husbands, daughter Judy Walther in 2000; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include: daughters Robyn Stack, Athens, Rayna Bartley, Hot Springs, Ark.; grandchildren Teresa Dure, Highland Village,  Nancy Foller, Fred Musil, Mitzi Chervenka, Scott Musil, all of St. Louis, Mo., Daren Bartley, Florida, Kathy Poole, Oregon and Troy Bartley, Dallas; 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John Dure, Scott Musil, Jacob Stack, Troy Bartley, Fred Musil and Alan Ahlgrimm

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Steven Helf, Harlee Wright, Gene McIntyre, Bill Gurley, Gene Sheppard, Dr. Kenneth Lemmon and Edwin Miller.

Visitation for family and friends will be 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. A special thank you is extended to Genesis Home Health and Hospice and Dr. Kenneth Lemmon for the care given to Kaye.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Angel Keepers, Eastern Hills Church of Christ, 1200 E. Corsicana St., Athens, TX 75751.
