Athens —
ATHENS-Alan D. Whatley, 85, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Dec. 31, 2012.
He was born Aug. 20, 1927 in Pauls Valley, Okla. to parents Tom and Della Jones Whatley. Alan joined the Merchant Marines at 16, and later served in the U. S. Army through the end of World War II in Germany and the South Pacific, before being honorably-discharged as a Sergeant in 1952.
During his early business career, Alan worked for General Electric and the U.S. Government throughout Canada and North America, until returning to Texas to start several businesses with brothers.
He married Thelma Johnson in 1958, and was a loving husband, and Godly example to his six children and seven grandchildren. Alan was a resident of Athens since 1966.
As one of the original real estate developers in the area surrounding Cedar Creek Lake, he developed several major properties, including what is now the City of Enchanted Oaks and Pinnacle Club.
He was active in the title and abstract business in Henderson County for many years, and founded Lakeshore Utility Company, in which he was actively-involved until his death.
He will be remembered by those closest to him as a steadfast advocate, trusted advisor and generous supporter of family and friends, alike. Above all, he loved the Lord, and demonstrated his strong Christian faith throughout his life, through his unselfish nature, and by exhibiting the Love of Christ to his family, and those he came in contact with.
He was preceded in death by his wife Thelma Whatley in 2010, brothers Jim Whatley, Otis Whatley, Arlie Whatley and sister Nettie Dowdy.
His family would like to thank his many doctors and the staffs of Trinity Mother Frances, and the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital for their loving care.
