Lalia Mae Lewis passed away Dec. 15 in Mabank, at the age of 98. Graveside services to be held Monday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. at Moorehead Melton Cemetery in Eustace, with Kelvin Reed officiating. Visitation will take place one our before service time at the cemetery.
She resided on the Lewis home-place since her retirement in 1990. She was born to Henry Russ Lewis and Cinderella (Rilla) Twyman Lewis April 30, 1914.
She was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings, Luther Lewis, Grady Lewis, Hubert Lewis, Laura Lewis Baker, Bertha Lewis Hastings, Ara Lee Lewis Rolls, Clarmon (Dick) Lewis and Woodrow W. Lewis. Also preceding her in death was her special companion, Good Cat.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She loved her special friends Donna Wendel and Fain Morton. The family wishes to thank them for the many kindnesses shown to her, as well as the exceptional nursing staff at Mabank Nursing Home.
Miss Lewis graduated from Athens High School. She received her degree from Texas Women's University, and went on to do graduate studies at Columbia University in New York City. She worked in Hawaii in the USO during the war. She worked in New York City at Goddard Neighborhood Center teaching refugee children, then returned to North Texas State in Denton as Professor of Physical Education.
She loved to travel, and traveled to every continent, as well as nearly every state. She lived an extraordinary life!
Pallbearers are Henry Lewis, Darrell Lewis, Jack Lewis, Mack Lewis, Donnie Lewis and Charles Seabourne.
