ATHENS-Services for John B. Tarter, Jr., 86, Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Perry Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park.
Mr. Tarter died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012 in Athens.
He was born July 5, 1925 in Grand Prairie to the late John Baxter Tarter, Sr. and Effie Elizabeth Rose Tarter.
As a young man, Mr. Tarter worked for Baker’s Shoes in Beaumont 17 years as a salesman of ladies’ shoes. He met and married Helen, his wife of 59 years while at Baker’s.
He later worked for Shell Oil Refinery, retiring in 1979 following a 30-year tenure. John and Mary Helen owned and operated Helen Tarter Realty in Surfside Beach for over 35 years. They moved from Freeport to Athens in 1999 to be near their children. He was a 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason, and was a member of Valley of Houston Orient of Texas AF & AM Lodge.
Church was a vital part of John’s life, he was a former church deacon. He was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Navy.
John was preceded in death by his wife, July 22, 2011 and daughter Judy Annette Tarter.
Survivors include sons John B. Tarter, III and wife Brenda, Athens, Floyd Joseph Tarter and wife Jo Ann, Surfside, Richard Baxter Wilson and wife Jill, Long Beach, Calif., daughters Helen Charlene Guess and husband Howard, Athens, Mary Elizabeth Christian and husband Gary, Humble, grandchildren Joanna Proctor, Sabrina Tarter, Alisa Monroe, Christopher Tarter, Jeffrey Tarter, Marc Tarter, Clint Wilson, Allie Wilson, Kelli Wood, Stacey Kockler, Kathy Irwin, Kimberly Dennis, Jennifer Saunier and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Tarter, Kevin Proctor, Jeffrey Tarter, Jason Saunier, Marc Tarter and Josh Monroe.
Visitation for family and friends will be noon until service time Saturday.

Linder ("LR") Ray Cliver passed away in his daughter's home in Corinth on May 17, 2012. LR was born in Athens on Jan. 20, 1938, to the late Alfred Edward, Sr. and Lola Mae Cliver. LR lived his entire life in Malakoff, except for a short period when he worked for Houston Power & Light. He has owned and operated Cliver's Garage in Malakoff for the past 30 years or more.

Burial of cremains will be in North Carolina. -
