Thelbert ‘Tom’ Martin Tant

Athens — Services for Thelbert “Tom” Martin Tant, 87, of Eustace, are scheduled for 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013 at Eubank Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Oden Latham officiating, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Canton.

Burial will be in Haven of Memories, Canton.

He passed away Aug. 15, 2013 in Eustace.

Mr. Tant was born Sept. 20, 1925 in Temple, to Joseph Clarence and Annetta Martin Tant.

Thelbert grew up in Temple where he played football for the Temple Wildcats. After high school, he joined the Marine Corps and served for 31 years. Thelbert served three tours in Korea and a tour during World War II, and participated in Chosin Reservoir Campaign. He fired the first round of the Korean War and also fired the 1,500,000th round. He married his wife Juanita of 50 years on Nov. 13, 1962. Thelbert worked for Cooper Airmotive/Aviall and retired after 25 years. He enjoyed gunsmithing, shooting and woodworking. He held several trophies for trap and skeet shooting and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Thelbert was also a founding member of Toys for Tots. He was a very devoted family man.

Surviving are daughter Judith "JoJo" and Greg Griffey of Eustace, son Tony and Becky Tant of Grand Prairie, stepson Bonny Louis and Jeanette Sumner of Canton, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, niece Dolores and Fred Weiner of Belton, niece Margaret and Richard Burke of Selma, Ala., nephew Joseph and Pam Tant of Orange, several other nieces and nephews.

Thelbert was preceded in death by his parents, wife  Juanita Tant, sister Thelma Cook, brother Maurice Tant.

Pallbearers are USMC.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
