Athens —
Francis Willard “Bud” Hubbs, 93, passed away peacefully in Tyler on Friday, Sept. 28. Mr. Hubbs had been a resident of Athens for four years.
Born in Loveland, Colo. on Feb. 5, 1919 to Otto and Francis Hubbs, he was the second-oldest of four children. He grew up in Milliken, Colo. on the family farm his father had homesteaded.
While attending University High in Greeley, Colo. he met his future wife, Madelyn Mason. On April 9, 1938, they married, and began an exciting and eventful life together.
Early in their married life, he owned and operated a service station near downtown Denver, was a trucker, and an owner of an aviation company and flight school in Greeley, Colo. During this time, two children, Will and Susan, were born.
Bud’s calling was to be a farmer, like his father, and he moved the family to Byers, Colo., where they owned and operated The Coronado Hotel and Restaurant for several years, while establishing the farming operation.
Bud loved flying and airplanes, and shared this passion with his son, Will, who became an Ag Pilot. Waterskiing and boating were also favorite activities during this time, and he loved telling about teaching Susan to ski. He shared a love of horses with his third child, Terri, born right as the others were leaving the nest.
His favorite horse was a stud named Ace that was a champion race horse, halter horse, and winner in events ranging from pleasure to calf roping.
He and Madelyn celebrated many anniversaries, their last being a 67th in 2005, the year that Madelyn passed away, exactly seven years to the minute before him. He was also preceded in death by his siblings; Charles, Lucille, and Elaine.
He leaves behind three children, Will Hubbs of Katy, Susan O’Connor of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Terri Hart and husband Doug of Athens; five grandchildren, Kim Madolora and husband Andy, Chris Hubbs and wife Kathryn, Kelli Kujawa and husband Mike, Kyle Boyer, and Haley Mitchell and husband Chris; and three great-grandchildren, Shane Madolora, Alexis Kujawa and Colton Kujawa.
There will be a memorial service at Hannigan-Smith Funeral Home at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are sent to The Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, TX 75701.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of The Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens.
