Joe Powell Fitzgerald

BROWNSBORO — BROWNSBORO - Services for Joe Powell Fitzgerald, 86 of Brownsboro are scheduled for 3:30 P M Sunday, December 15, 2013 at First United Methodist Church of Chandler with Dr. Stan Copeland officiating.

Masonic graveside services will follow in Chandler Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.

Daddy “went home” as he had been telling us he was, late Wednesday night, December 11, 2013 with his loving and loyal caregivers Mary Voyles and Amy Echols holding his hands.

He was born September 9, 1927 in Chandler to Taylor Tresmon and Jewel Powell Fitzgerald. In January1950 he married the love of his life Betty Jean Barton-he drove all the way to Brownsboro to get her. Mom and Dad had four children together- three daughters who were named by daddy, Jan, Ann and Nan and finally his pride and joy, a son Joey. Daddy’s career life included working on a ranch in Palo Pinto, LaGloria Oil and Gas in Tyler, a Realtor in Athens, in specialty advertising over a 4-state area in “retirement” and throughout all of it, a cattle rancher.

He and mom enjoyed traveling to Old Mexico and Galveston in their Winnebago, usually with some of us packed in with them. Daddy’s best trip was in October each year, pheasant season in Carthage, South Dakota. He planned and looked forward to this trip all year.

For forty years he owned a bright yellow three story frame house right down town Carthage where he, our brother, brothers-in-law, nephews, sometimes sisters and a motley crew of Athenians and friends gathered one weekend a year to visit, eat, “talk big” and argue over who was the “Big Daddy” that year. To hear Carthage Tales you can no longer get the true story from Tommy Williams, Jerry King or Bob Kinsey but you might ask Damon Douglas, Elton Bomer, Don Bullock, Mike Jones, Steve Woodruff, Drew Douglas, Jeff Fulgham, Gary Williamson or Kevin Johnson.

Daddy was preceded in death by his parents, wife of fifty-eight years Betty Barton Fitzgerald and his son-in-law Pat Neill.

Surviving him are daughters Jan Masso and husband Joe, Athens, Nan Ramsey and husband Scott, Cedar Hill, Ann Neill, Mexia; son Joey Fitzgerald and wife Angie, Athens, sister Nell Fitzgerald Warren and brother Ben Fitzgerald. Also surviving daddy were those he considered his kids: Charles Earl Gray, Greg Sherffield, Kendal, Kyle and Heather Voyles and Lori Graham. He was “Grumps” to grandchildren Michael and Jennifer Neill, Kathryn and Paul Woods, Jadd and Christina Masso, Jill and Gene Blanton, Lane and Ignacio Jauregui, Taylor Fitzgerald, Trevor Fitzgerald and C. J. Ramsey; “Grumpsey”to great grandchildren Jessica and Austin Neill, Aubrey and Abby Woods, Ivy Masso, Piper and Levi Blanton and Emma Jauregui. Lastly, daddy was much loved by his ever-faithful pug, Cowboy.

Serving as pallbearers will be Kendal Voyles, Kyle Voyles, Heather Voyles, Cindy Arthur, Greg Sherffield, Steve Woodruff, Ty Tompkins, Randal Clayton, Michael Martin and Jeff Fulgham.

Visitation is scheduled for 5-7 P M Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the funeral home.

If desired, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P O Box 154, Brownsboro, Texas, 75756.

The family thanks C. T. Osborne for his many hours of sitting by daddy’s side and for driving him all around Henderson County, and to hospice nurse Mike Pace who treated daddy and our entire family as if we were his family.
