Carol Johnson

Athens — Funeral services for Carol Ann Johnson, 65, of Palestine will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Southside Baptist Church with the Rev.  Woody Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Land of Memory Cemetery under the direction of Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.

She was born Oct. 21, 1947, in Athens, to Nelia Jo Barnett Holley and J.T. Holley.  She was raised in Dallas, and moved to Mesquite where she graduated from Mesquite High School.  She attended Henderson County and Brazosport Colleges where she majored in music and psychology.

Carol married Lionel Johnson, Jr. on Sept. 30, 1967.  They moved to Brazoria County where she was youth and music director for many years at the First Baptist Church in Rosharon.  She was one of the Carol’s in a ladies trio, “His Carol.”  They sang all over Brazoria County.

From 1977 to 1993, she was a substitute teacher for Angleton Independent School District.  She loved being with youth, especially high school youth.  What fun she had chaperoning the band.  Going to church camp and leading Bible Study was some of the best times for her.  During her years in Brazoria County, she was in Home Demonstration, and was a Boy Scout (Cub) leader.

Carol loved to sing since her childhood.  Christian music touched her heart the most, and for many years, she was praise leader for the Lay Renewal Movement.  She sang from Texas to California.

Her family moved to Anderson County, where she served as youth leader for a while at Montalba Baptist Church. After moving to Palestine, she and Lionel joined Southside Baptist Church, where she sang in the Choir, and with the Praise Team, until her illness interfered with her voice.  Carol was a volunteer at the hospital and Ladies Living Alternative.  She was a retired employee of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Carol felt blessed to have been a part of a wonderful family, extended family, and a multitude of friends.

She is preceded in death by her father, J.T. Holley and father-in-law, Lionel, Sr., her brother, Herschel Wayne Holley and sister-in-law, Christie Johnson.

Those left to remember her are her husband, of 45 years, Lionel Johnson, Jr.; mother, Nelia Jo Holley; son, Scott Johnson (Jamie); daughter, Lora Johnson Miller (Richard) and daughter, Ramona Johnson Buckley Pharis (Tommie); grandchildren, Krista and Tyler Johnson, Christopher Buckley, Magan, Kyle, and Ashleigh Miller, Savannah and Brook Pharis; and much loved brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and so many special friends.  Carol was loved by many, and will be truly missed.

Pallbearers will be Scott Johnson, Richard Miller, Kyle Miller, Chris Buckley, Tommy Pharis and Don Johnson.  Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Beil and Robert Auer.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.
