Trinity Valley Community College will be remembering the past, and celebrating the present next week during the college’s annual homecoming festivities.
Homecoming activities are set to begin Oct. 11 and run through Oct. 13.
This year, the college will be recognizing the 65th anniversary of the Cardinal Cheerleading team. The first cheerleading squad began cheering at Henderson County Junior College (now TVCC) in 1947. Since then, the cheerleading team has been an integral part of school spirit at the college.
In 1989, the team moved into the national spotlight by becoming the first junior college team to win a National Cheerleaders Association national title. Since then, the college has taken the national championship eight more times.
“We are very excited to be able to honor the hundreds of students who have been an amazing part of our cheerleading tradition,” said Mary Nicholson, vice president of institutional advancement. “We are expecting hundreds of former cheerleaders to visit us next week, and we will be honoring them throughout the weekend at every event.”
The college will begin the 2012 homecoming festivities with the traditional carnival for the community and students. The carnival will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Oct. 11. The event is open to the public, and provides a variety of activities free of charge. The carnival includes giant inflatables, games and great music. A pep rally is set to start around 6 p.m.
On Oct. 12, the college will host a golf classic in honor of the late Dr. W.P. “Rip” Drumgoole. Drumgoole served almost four decades at the college. He died in 2011. Tee time for the golf classic will be at 8:30 a.m. Cost to play is $35, and those who would like to participate can call Gaylord Walden, golf-pro at Athens Country Club, at 903-677-3844.
That evening, the college will welcome alumni with a reception at the Athens Country Club. The event will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 12. The event is free-of-charge to TVCC alumni and their families.
The day of the game, Oct. 13, TVCC will induct the 2012 class of the Cardinal Hall of Fame during a special ceremony and luncheon at 11 a.m. The event is open to the public, and tickets are $10 each. Among the inductees will be the entire 1989 Cardinal Cheerleading team.
The crowning of the 2012 Trinity Valley Community College homecoming court will be around 2:30 p.m., Saturday, at Bruce Field. The college decided this year to add a homecoming king to the court. So the queen and king will both be announced during pregame ceremonies.
The Cardinals will face Blinn College starting at 3 p.m.
