It’s official, according to Needville ISD School Board President Jim Kocian. Current Athens ISD Superintendent Curtis Rhodes is the new NISD superintendent.

Rhodes was approved for the position Wednesday night in a 6-0 vote at an NISD school board meeting. The decision came after a state-mandated 21-day waiting period.

“We think that Rhodes is what Needville ISD needed,” Kocian said. “We’re very happy that he decided to come aboard.”

NISD is located about 45 miles southwest of Houston. Rhodes described NISD as his native school district in previous interviews.

Rhodes began his candidacy for the NISD position in early March. He was declared the “Lone Candidate” for the position on April 19.

NISD Superintendent Gary Gazaway tendered his resignation at Wednesday’s meeting, though he will stay on until the end of the school year to ease Rhodes’ transition into the district. Gazaway’s resignation will officially take effect May 31.

Rhodes, Gazaway, and AISD School Board President Will Davies could not be reached for comment.
