A 2-year-old boy missing from his mother’s Crescent Heights residence since Monday was back with family members Wednesday morning, according to information from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department.

“The boy is safe, and that’s what’s important,” said Henderson County Sheriff Ronny Brownlow.

Joseph Kyle Butler Jr. was reported kidnapped Monday after his mother told law officers he had been taken by her ex-boyfriend. She told deputies the ex-boyfriend, Joseph Kyle Butler, 21, was not the biological father of the child although they shared the same name.

The woman later recanted that story, leading authorities to drop the kidnapping warrant. A birth certificate was located in Idaho that named Butler as the boy’s father. The mother could face charges for giving a false report to police, HCSD Public Information Officer Lt. Pat McWilliams said.

Brownlow said the elder Butler, who is still being sought on a motion to revoke community supervision warrant, has not been located as of press time Wednesday.

“Our investigators are looking for him,” Brownlow said.
