MESQUITE -- The Athens Hornets (4-6) lead the Waco LaVega Pirates (6-4) at the half, 13-7, of their Region III-3A Division I bi-district playoff today at E.H. Hanby Stadium.

After a dropped punt snap, LaVega scored first on a 10-yard Devonte Jones touchdown run to go up 7-0.

But Athens scored 13 unanswered points to take the lead. Courtney Whitehead's 75-yard touchdown catch from Jack Barkley tied the game at 7-7 on the first play of the second quarter, and Felipe Robles' 40-yard field goal -- Athens' longest of the season -- put the Hornets ahead, 10-7, with 8:17 left in the first half.

Zabdiel Mota would later come on to nail a 27-yard field goal to increase the lead to 13-7.

The Hornets' defense has played lights out against the powerful LaVega running attack, holding the Pirates to just 90 first-half yards.

Information on the conclusion of the game will be posted later today. Check our "Breaking News" box on our homepage to stay updated on the game, or check out our page at Twitter.com.
