The U.S. Post Office in Poynor appears headed for a major cut in business hours following a meeting Monday night at the Poynor Community Center.
About 20 residents gathered to hear from postal officials concerning the future of the office located on U.S. Highway 175 in the heart of the community of just over 300 citizens.
“I’m here to bring the bad news, but not real bad because we’re not closing your post office,” Moderator Debra Vande-venter, postmaster of the Henderson Post Office, said. “A couple of years ago the plan was to close some of the post offices that weren’t earning their hours. Last year they came up with another plan and that’s why we’re here tonight.”
Vandeventer said 70 Poynor residents returned questionnaires choosing between four options for the future of the post office. The voters unanimously picked shorter hours over moving mail service to a store, getting mail from a nearby town or home delivery. Vandeventer said once final approval is given the hour change should go into effect in about 30 days.
The Poynor office will open at 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and will keep its 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturday schedule. The lobby will remain open 24-hours a day for those who want to check their boxes or mail letters. The Poynor office will be under the supervision on the Frankston Post Office, but will maintain its current 75782 zip code.
Besides the cutback in hours, members of the audience had a few other questions about the ongoing service at the post office. Most concerned when the combination locks would be removed from the post office boxes and replaced with key locks.
Poynor Post Office Officer in Charge Chris DeChant said a few of the locks have been changed, but it’s a slow process.

A future investment
Harry and Patti Hogue present a check for $500 to go toward the Splash Pad at Kiwanis Park in Athens. The fund-raising effort is nearing the finish line for the $220,000 project, although donations are still being sought. The Splash Pad is expected to be open some time this summer.

To make the day complete, the Athens Municipal Airport will be hosting a “Fly-in” on Saturday, June 1. According to organizer Charles Tidmore, the event will give the local community a better awareness and appreciation of the Athens Airport. -
