When an idea was presented to the Board to decorate the cat room in the new adoption building at the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake, it was not known that it would turn out as well as it did.
As the walls are made of material designed specifically to facilitate cleaning, the HSCCL could not paint directly on the walls.
Artist Christopher Terwilliger, from New York, relative of a local resident, proposed cutouts that could be staged and hung in groupings on the walls. He hand-painted realistic, but larger-than-life cats and kittens on primed, sanded board. Some of the ideas for the cat’s poses and colors were taken from pictures of cats in residence at the shelter.
Then the painted cats were cut out, edges sanded and paint touched up. When finish coats are completed in the coming weeks, the painted cats will take their place amongst the furry felines in the cat-adoption room. The Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake wishes to thank Terwilliger for donating his time and talents, as well as Larry Reneau, Custom Home Painting and Remodeling of Mabank for his generous donation of paints for the project. The paint colors were mixed at the Sherwin Williams Paint Store in Gun Barrel City.

Athens house burned
A Monday afternoon fire inflicted severe damage to a house at 911 W. Cayuga Dr. in Athens.
No one was injured in the blaze that started in the back bedroom of the residence. Athens Fire Chief John McQueary said the resident had been staying with her sister and was not at home at the time of the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation. -

Time to have a blast
The annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is coming up on Thursday, July 4. The show will last about one-half hour and is one of the biggest in East Texas.
The fireworks show is directed and produced by Alpha-Lee Enterprises, Inc. of Liverpool, Texas. The show is a Keep Athens Beautiful event. -

Beetle infestation in county
If you’ve noticed some big black bugs gathering outside your home or crawling along the carpet, you’re just seeing evidence of the large number of ground beetles now in East Texas.
