A long-running Athens event gets a revival Saturday, with the Val Tumlinson Memorial Holiday Gift and Craft Fair at the First United Methodist Church.
The fundraiser for the Henderson County Food Pantry will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Organizer Patty Curtis said it will be a great opportunity to come by, and get that item that might just be perfect for the special one your list.
“We hope they will all come out, and do some shopping to support the local artisans,” Curtis said. “A lot of them are senior citizens, and use this to add to their income.”
The fundraiser had been a fixture on the calendar for more than 30 years. After long-time organizer Val Tumlinson died in June, 2011, the event lapsed.
“We just didn’t pick up the ball and run with it after she died, so we’re in the first year of the remaking,” Curtis said.
The people at the Methodist Church, especially the Methodist women, have worked hard to bring the Craft Fair back. A benefactor at the church paid the rental for the building, Curtis said.
Vendors rent tables for $15 each. Curtis said about 15 vendors have signed up, and most will have two tables for their wares.
“We have a lady bringing ceramics, all kinds of collectibles,” Curtis said. “We have a lady from Mabank coming with potholders and hand-sewn items. She has won several blue ribbons at the State Fair for her quilts.”
In addition to the arts and craft items, food is also in the mix. You can browse the bake sale sponsored by the United Methodist Women. If you come hungry, a lunch provided by the Methodist Men will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A future investment
Harry and Patti Hogue present a check for $500 to go toward the Splash Pad at Kiwanis Park in Athens. The fund-raising effort is nearing the finish line for the $220,000 project, although donations are still being sought. The Splash Pad is expected to be open some time this summer.

To make the day complete, the Athens Municipal Airport will be hosting a “Fly-in” on Saturday, June 1. According to organizer Charles Tidmore, the event will give the local community a better awareness and appreciation of the Athens Airport. -

The contractor is known as a construction manager at risk.
