Speed cut on county road

Commissioners vote to make 35 limit for County Road 4334 in New York

Athens — A busy county road that runs by the New York Baptist Church now has a 35 miles-per-hour speed limit following a vote of the Henderson County Commissioners Court on Tuesday.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Ken Geeslin said County Road 4334 has seen an increase in residences along its 2.4-mile stretch in recent years. The road stretches from Farm-to-Market Road 607 south to CR 4336.

The people who live along the roadway were notified and none objected to the proposed 35 miles-per-hour limit. The speed limit on county roads not located in an urban area is usually 60 miles-per-hour, unless the Commissioners Court enacts a change.

In other action, commissioners accepted the 2012 Racial Profiling Report from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office. Major Botie Hillhouse said the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education requires the report each year to document the race of the stops made by the department. Hillhouse said about  86 percent of the stops involving the HCSO during the year involved Caucasians.

Commissioners also voted to:

• set a public hearing for March 12 at 9:30 a.m. to discuss adopting new Texas Commission on Environmental Quality regulations for on-site sewage facilities;

• approve the tax resale of a property in Cherokee Shores at a price of $200;

• approve the  tax resale of property in Log Cabin Estates at a price of $750;

• approve a new contract with Preferred Interpreters for services to the county;

• approve payment of state fees in the amount of $134,338.39;

• to approve payment of 2013 bills in the amount of $21,299.03; and

• to approve payment of 2012 bills in the amount of $234,165.11.
