ATHENS —
A 24-year-old Payne Springs man eluded arrest in a stolen vehicle Thursday and was later found hiding in a garage, according to a report from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.
Chase Matthew Caddell was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, evading arrest and detention with a motor vehicle, theft of a firearm, criminal trespass of a habitation and criminal mischief. Total bond on Caddell was set at $65,000.
The chain of events that led to Caddell’s arrest started at about 8:15 a.m. Thursday when HCSO Deputy Charlie Severn was patrolling in the Cherokee Shores subdivision. According to reports, Severn saw a traffic violation on Quanah Street involving a Ford F-250 pickup. When the deputy tried to make a traffic stop, the driver of the pickup sped away. HCSO later learned that the Ford pickup had been reported stolen from the Dallas area.
Severn continued to chase Caddell until he turned onto Carson Road, lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway. When Caddell couldn’t go any farther in the truck, he got out and began to run.
As Caddell fled, Severn reportedly saw a handgun in his right hand. During the foot pursuit, Caddell threw the handgun under a home owner’s vehicle. Eventually, Caddell jumped a fence and eluded the deputy.
Soon after, the HCSO Command Staff, deputies and officers from other agencies gathered in Cherokee Shores to join in the search for the man. Texas Department of Criminal Justice K-9 unit was also dispatched to help hunt for the suspect.
According to reports, Caddell’s run ended when deputies discovered that he had kicked in the door of a residence off Carson Road. The HCSO tactical team entered the residence and found Caddell hiding under a vehicle in the garage. Caddell was taken into custody without further incident and transported to jail.
The HCSO was aided in the search by the Eustace Police Department, Henderson County District Attorney’s Office, Henderson County Attorney’s Office and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
