Making a splash in 2013

ATHENS — Folks don’t typically think about making a splash in January.

As for the Athens Chamber of Commerce? It’s hoping for something akin to a community-sized cannonball on the eve of its annual membership banquet, which is scheduled for Friday at Athens Country Club.

The theme of this year’s banquet is “Splash into 2013” — a reference to the chamber’s  partnership with the Athens Kiwanis Club and the Athens Leadership Institute to build a Splash Pad at Kiwanis Park. The Splash Pad is a free water play area intended to increase physical exercise while having plenty of fun.

Bricks that will be a part of the foundation of the $200,000 Splash Pad (of which about a quarter of the money has been raised) will be on sale at the banquet for $50 each.

The banquet will begin with cocktails being served from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dinner will be served around 7, and the program will begin at 7:30.

The banquet will include installation of officers; a silent auction; and the announcement of the winners for the Small Business of the Year; Large Business of the Year; Ambassador of the Year; and the Citizen of the Year.

Tickets for the banquet are $37.50 and can be purchased at the chamber of commerce (201 West Corsicana, Suite 1) or from any chamber ambassador.

For more information, call the chamber at 903-675-5181.
