School trip saved by auto repairman’s good deed

Athens — On October 9, a group of students from Cushing High School  made an unscheduled visit to Athens.

Two buses full of kids with the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and the Future Farmers of America came through town on the way to the annual Youth Day at the State Fair of Texas.

The caravan stopped, however, when a radiator hose busted on one of their buses near Loop 7. Luckily, the group was stranded in front of Steve’s Auto and Truck Repair on North Palestine.

“They were so nice and helped us out with the bus. It took the guy about an hour to do the repair, and he did not charge us for the repair,” Cushing ISD instructor Becky Raney said.

Steve Harris, owner of Steve’s Auto, said helping people is something he tries to do on a daily basis.

“They actually broke down in our parking lot and they were just sitting there,” Harris said. “It wasn’t a great, big thing to take time out to help them with the repairs. The Lord gives us opportunities in life to help others, and I try to do as much as I can to help people.”

Raney said the Cushing Independent School District sent the repair shop a thank you for its services.

“That man spent an hour of his time on our bus,” Raney said. “He could not have been any nicer with taking care of the radiator hose, filling it up with anti-freeze and helping make sure our kids got to the fair.”
