BROWNSBORO — Members of the Brownsboro High School band will get to do something most youths only dream of on Jan. 2.
They will be performing as part of the halftime show at the 2013 AllState Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, La.
“We have 105 band members going and 25 more parents that will be making the trip with us. We could not take every member of the band because of their commitments with the New Year's holiday,” Brownsboro band director Jeff Russell said.
The group will be traveling to New Orleans by bus on New Year's Eve and staying in the area through Jan. 4.
Russell said the band received an invitation from the Sugar Bowl committee back in March. He said after having a discussion with the band they accepted the invitation in June.
Once everything was set in stone, the hard work began as the band boosters started raising money to go on the trip. He said they did fundraiser's at Sonic and Wal-Mart, washed cars and did whatever else they could to raise the money.
After all was said and done, the boosters raised $95-thousand dollars to go on the trip.
“It has been a big honor to work at Brownsboro,” Russell said. “It has been a pleasure to work with these kids and I am really proud of them. They do whatever we ask them to do and these kids have worked hard for this. I am also proud of what the boosters did in terms of raising the money for the trip.”
Russell said the halftime performance will have about eight other bands performing.
The game is set for Jan. 2 between the No. 21-ranked Louisville Cardinals (10-2) and the No. 3-ranked Florida Gators (11-1). The game is being played at the Mercedes Benz Superdome, home of the New Orleans Saints.

A personal story to tell

Athens house burned
A Monday afternoon fire inflicted severe damage to a house at 911 W. Cayuga Dr. in Athens.
No one was injured in the blaze that started in the back bedroom of the residence. Athens Fire Chief John McQueary said the resident had been staying with her sister and was not at home at the time of the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation. -

Time to have a blast
The annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is coming up on Thursday, July 4. The show will last about one-half hour and is one of the biggest in East Texas.
The fireworks show is directed and produced by Alpha-Lee Enterprises, Inc. of Liverpool, Texas. The show is a Keep Athens Beautiful event. -
