Athens — An employee of the Henderson County Auditor’s Office and her son, an 11-year-old Brownsboro student, were killed in a Saturday afternoon crash on Spur 364 near Tyler.

Tammy Sue Latson, 37, of Murchison, died at the scene of the wreck. Her son, Rowdy Latson, was pronounced dead of his injuries a few hours later at East Texas Medical Center, Tyler. Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Jean Dark said the 5-vehicle chain-reaction wreck also sent six people to Tyler hospitals with various injuries.

Tammy Sue’s husband, Shawn, 45, who was driving the Latson’s Toyota Tacoma, was among those hurt in the wreck. He was transported to East Texas Medical Center Tyler, where he remained in critical condition, Monday.

Dark said the Latson’s Toyota was westbound at about 3 p.m., Saturday on the busy spur that connects State Highway 31 with Loop 323 in Tyler. As the Latsons neared County Road 1311, they stopped in a line of cars  behind a driver waiting to make a left turn.

As the lead driver waited for an eastbound vehicle to pass, Dark said, a 2006 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Gasca Ramona of Tyler, crashed into the Toyota, sending the Latson’s vehicle into the eastbound lane. An oncoming Honda Element, driven by Rachel Burk of Palestine, struck the Latson’s vehicle broadside.

After striking the Latsons, Ramona’s Impala continued westbound striking a Chevrolet Malibu driven by 52-year-old Cherrie Rogers of Athens. The impact pushed Roger’s car into the lead vehicle, a Cadilac driven by Stephanie Miller of Mineola.

Tammy Sue Latson worked at the Henderson County Auditor’s Office in the Courthouse Annex in Athens. She was remembered, Monday, as a diligent employee who was well-liked by co-workers.

Rowdy was a sixth-grade student at Brownsboro Intermediate School. He had been an honor-roll student there and during his years in elementary school.
