Athens City Council accepted Mayor Randy Daniel’s letter of resignation at Monday night's regularly-scheduled council meeting.
Daniel’s letter of resignation was dated Nov. 20. The letter recommended Councilman Place 1 Jerry Don Vaught to replace Daniel as mayor. That is exactly what the council did.
After the council convened in executive session to discuss filling the Mayor's position, and Place 1 Council seat, they reconvened to take a vote. Vaught was unanimously appointed Mayor.
City Secretary Pam Watson swore in Vaught. After thanking the council, Vaught said “I look forward to serving as Mayor.”
With Vaught now mayor, his seat, Place 1, was vacated. Vaught said the council had considered several people to fill the Place 1 seat. Monty Montgomery was nominated, and the council once again voted unanimously to fill the empty council seat with Montgomery.
Daniel resigned after accepting the position to fill the unexpired term of Justice of the Peace Henry Ashford. The JP term Daniel is filling will expire Dec. 31, 2013. Ashford died recently of an apparent heart attack.
Daniel’s resignation goes into effect as soon as he accepted the position as JP, according to city charter.
