Athens — The Athens Independent School District Board meets Tuesday to discuss the status of the superintendent position.

The meeting, set for 6 p.m. in the District Support Center Board Room at 104 Hawn St., is in response to word that Superintendent Dr. Robert Steeber is planning to leave the district to accept a position with Region 11.

Steeber has been at the helm of the AISD for about a year, and has completed the first year of a three year contract.

Steeber confirmed last week, that he had been offered the position of deputy executive director for administration operations at the Education Service Center for Region XI in Fort Worth.

The school board will conduct the discussions in executive session, then return to regular session for any action that might be taken. The next regularly-scheduled meeting of the trustees is set for  Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.

Steeber  came to work at AISD about a year ago. He was hired after a vote of the trustees on Sept. 11, 2011 to be the replacement for Fred Hayes, who had resigned in May. Dr. Vance Vaughn served as interim Superintendent until Steeber was hired.

Steeber was chosen from a pool of more than 60 candidates. He had been at S and S Consolidated in Sadler for four years. Before that, he served in Collinsville (1996-2001), Celina (01-04), Thrall (04-05) and Daingerfield (05-07).
