Massive expansion nears finish

Oak Wood Place adding 28,000 square feet to current building

ATHENS — Oak Wood Place Assisted Living in Athens is completing  a large expansion that is adding 28,000 square feet to the facility on Wood Street in Athens.

Oak Wood Place  will complete the expansion and be ready for new tenants by July 15. Daniels said there will be an open house planned for sometime in August.

The upscale senior living is surrounded by oak trees and the property sits on about five of the 46 acres available. The high ceilings contribute to the openness and airy feel.

Athens businessmen Blake Daniels and his father, David, are partners in the venture.

Blake said, “My brother, Derek, passed away about three years ago and he had a vision for Oak Wood Place. My dad and I decided to honor my brother by continuing with his dream. He wanted Oak Wood Place to be a premier Athens senior assistant living facility. We want to accomplish that for Derek.”

As Blake  tours the facility, his pride in the project is evident.

“We have not only added to the main building. There are 16 cottages that will be 1,300 square feet each,” Blake said. “Each cottage has two  bedrooms, two baths and a two-car garage. They are designed for the person who no longer wants the upkeep of a larger home. The cottages  are considered  independent living, people who can take care of themselves.”

Each cottage is complete with appliances and marble counter tops. Washer and dryer connections are in each cottage.

The current building Blake refers to as “Building A” has 100 rooms. The expansion has added 44 more rooms.  The addition, a two-story structure, will have rooms upstairs and on the first level. Each room has a patio area for residents to sit outside.

“There will be landscaping and flowers planted around each living quarters,” Blake said.

There are six floor plans ranging from 300-square- feet to 500-square-feet of living space. The expansion referred to as “Building B” has been designed with Red Iron and is insulated for fire protection.

The expansion also includes a large game room that will include a theater, Xbox, Wii, 60-inch TV and tables for all kinds of games. The residents will also have free Internet available. “We want to provide  multiple  forms of entertainment for all our residents,” Blake said.

There are televisions positioned for everyone from the dining room to the common areas to enjoy.

“We have created some common areas for the residents to visit or just watch TV,” Blake said.

Oak Wood Place is a pet-friendly facility. There is a fee to bring your pet, but your pet is welcome.

“We like the pets to be less than 20 pounds, but we welcome pets,” Blake said.
