Athens Partnership Center open house Monday

Athens — An open house is planned Monday for the Athens Partnership Center, a building that houses several local organizations under one roof.

Athens Economic Development Corporation President/CEO Brian Malone said the gathering will be a way of celebrating the 1-year anniversary of the facility. It will offer the public a chance to get a first-hand look at what’s available at the center.

Everyone’s invited to drop by the come-and-go get-together between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The Partnership Center is the home of the AEDC offices, along with the Athens Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Tourism, Keep Athens Beautiful, the Trinity Valley Community College Small Business Development Center and The Murchison Foundation.

There’s plenty of room for those entities to conduct business, and a large meeting area available.

Malone said having them all under one roof creates a kind of synergy for the city.

“It’ll be set up sort of like a trade show,” Malone said of the upcoming event. “Each organization will have a booth manned by a representative.”

You can stop by and ask questions, as well as pick up printed information about the groups occupying the offices.

The Partnership Center is located in the Old Eckerd Drug building, at 201 W. Corsicana St., although you wouldn’t recognize it. The building went through months of extensive updating and remodeling, both outside and inside, to get it ready for its current use.

The building had been vacant for  years before it was purchased by the Athens Economic Development Corporation in September of 2010.

The AEDC advertised for bids, and in June, 2011, awarded the project to Fast Track Construction of Dallas.

The work was complete by the end of the year. The Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for the Partnership Center in January, 2012.
