Biker evades police in chase

Athens — A motorcyclist sped away from an attempted traffic stop in Athens Saturday and led law officers on a two county chase.

Athens Police Dept. Lt. Mike Davis said authorities are not sure of the rider’s identity at this time. The Department of Public Safety reported stopping a motorcyclist shortly before the Athens chase, but APD is not sure if it was the same person.

APD reports said Officer James Graham saw the motorcyclist run a red light at the intersection of E. Corsicana Street and S. Palestine Street at about 10:43 p.m. The motorcycle was a dark color and the rider was  wearing a blue tee- shirt, blue jeans and a red and white helmet, reports said.

Officers Chad Walker, Jeremy Hugghins and Corporal Roger Keith were informed about the  vehicle and joined in the chase. With police in pursuit, the motorcycle traveled east on U.S. Highway 175 and left the city limits  The chase continued past Safari Waters and the LaPoynor School until it reached Poynor city limits.

When the fleeing motorcycle reached the blinking yellow light at the intersection of U.S. 175 and Farm-to-Market Road 315 in Poynor, the rider turned right toward Brushy Creek in Anderson County. The Athens officers lost sight of the speeding motorcycle about two miles from the Poynor city limit sign.

A short time later the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle on State Highway 155. The ACSO deputies pursued the motorcycle toward the Smith County line, but also lost track of the evading rider.

Also shown is Sierra Kaufman, one of several American Heritage Girls who will be joining the boys in their efforts to collect food.  In the past few years, despite the economy, over 1,000 cans each year have been collected and donated to Henderson County’s Food Pantry.  So when you see these boys and girls in uniform this weekend, open your hearts and help feed the hungry in Henderson County.

  • City hears presentation for new apartment complex

    The Athens City Council heard a presentation, Wednesday, from a group that hopes to obtain a grant to build an apartment complex in south Athens.
    Jay Oji, of Sphinx Development Corporation, said the 80-unit complex called Robbins Villas would be built on a tract of land where Robbins Road intersects with Loop 7. The affordable housing units would cost about $12 million to construct.

    A former Athens High School student Bryan Sory is now flying FA-18C Hornets, the U.S. Navy’s frontline fighter plane.  Lt. Commander Sory flies for VFA-151, The Vigilantes, based in Lemoore, Calif.  VFA-151 deployed aboard the U.S.S. Lincoln in December, 2011, and is currently flying missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the overarching operation that encompasses, among other things, ongoing counter-terrorism and nation-building efforts in Afghanistan.
