The Athens Review
A Texas Ranger’s investigation into the fatal shooting of a drug suspect by a Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Investigator continued Friday.
Ranger Michael Adcock was informed of the shooting minutes after the drug search on Monday in Hidden Hills Harbor near Payne Springs in which 33-year-old Daniel Richard Vasquez was killed.
Sheriff Ray Nutt declined to name the investigator involved in the shooting or the events that led to the shooting, stating that he didn’t want to comment on anything that was part of the Ranger’s investigation.
Nutt said the officer involved was placed on administrative duty and scheduled to meet with a counselor. It is mandatory in his department for the investigator who did the shooting, as well as the other officers at the scene, to speak to a counselor.
District Attorney Scott McKee said that regardless of whether or not the Ranger investigation finds the shooting justified, his office will be given the information.
“We’ll present it to a grand jury, not necessarily for prosecution, but for review,” McKee said.
McKee said anytime there is an officer-involved shooting in the county, the Ranger is called to investigate. Sometimes the first call comes to him, but in the case of the Hidden Hills Harbor incident, Nutt called Adcock.
Adcock has been called to investigate in other officer-involved shootings in the county, notably the October, 2010 confrontation between law enforcement personnel and Howard Tom Granger who was suspected of killing Ben Gill Clements, son of former Texas Governor Bill Clements in a wooded area south of Athens.
Sheriff’s Office reports indicate several officers arrived at the residence on Channel View in Hidden Hills Harbor at about 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday to execute a search warrant. During the procedure, Vasquez was wounded and transported to East Texas Medical Center in Gun Barrel City where he was pronounced dead by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Dale Blaylock.
Vasquez had a record of multiple arrests in the North Texas area, including a 2008 arrest by Caney City Police for several charges including assault on a family member and terroristic threats.
