HCHC to host four horse clinics Sept. 7-8

Athens — The Henderson County Horse Committee will host four horse clinics at the Henderson County Fairpark Complex.

The clinics will be held Sept. 7-8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

On Saturday, they will have a Working Cow Horse clinic hosted by Walter Grider in the J.D. Lewis Arena.

If you are participating in the Working Cow Horse clinic, there will be a $25 charge for the cattle fee.

“The response has been really good,” Vice Chairman Charlotte Algood said. “We have people signed up for the Working Cow Horse because I have to know, so I can pay for the cows.

The other clinic is hosted by Richard Spinks and is a total body-control clinic held in the Coliseum.

Algood said that particular clinic is specialized in knowing how to control your horse.

On Sunday, participants can learn how to ride during the barrel-and-pole clinic, led by J.D. and Michelle Coxx from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Coliseum.

The final clinic will be the trail riding clinic at the Henderson County Horse Committee Trail Course. That clinic is led by Ray Weatheread.

Allgood said she would like to see the community get involved with the horse committee.

“People can also come and watch,” Algood said. “If they don't have a horse and they want to come and see what is going on, they are invited to come.”

The Horse Committee is a volunteer committee of 12 members under the auspices of the Agri-Life Exension Service.

They host a fundraiser during the Athens Summer Jubilee in July that helps pay the trainers for the clinics at no charge to the public.

Stalls and RV hook-ups are available for $20 each and shavings for the horses are $8 per bag.

For reservations, call Allgood at 903-288-0043.
