When fans come to the Tuesday night Trinity Valley Community College home basketball opener, they will see new improvements around Cardinal Gym.
“The biggest thing is when I got here from a recruiting point that we have great tradition here,” said Kris “Bucket” Baumann, who is the associate athletic director and head men's basketball coach. “The biggest point was we had to improve our facilities. I thought that was a big key when I got here for visits.”
The improvements Baumann mentioned were two brand-new scoreboards, new pro-basketball goals, a new paint job to the press box and a video board sponsored by Elder Dodge.
“We tried to do as much as we could in-hand. I think fans will be very impressed when they come into the gymnasium,” Baumann said. “They will see a lot of different things, and they will notice that we modified the scorers’ table area.”
He said the new basketball goals were provided by Super 8 Motel, and the board of trustees paid for the new scoreboards.
“We are trying to make things nicer for recruiting purposes and for those who work here everyday,” Baumann said. “We want the students to have a place they can be proud of, and have a better learning environment.”
The biggest thing that Baumann said he wanted to achieve back in February of this year was the dedication of the gymnasium floor after former coach Leon Spencer.
“The biggest thing was we got a new floor and painted it, and then named it after Leon Spencer,” Baumann said. “I thought that was overdue for his many years of service that he gave to the college and the program.”
Baumann said other improvements coming to Cardinal Gym are improvements to the training room and the Red Room that is in place so that the scoreboard can have some sponsors for the games. The Red Room is a room inside Cardinal Gym used for special events.
Plans to improve the bleachers in Cardinal Gym are being put together by Baumann, but will take some time to fix in the future.
“We are going to work on new bleachers in the future,” Baumann said. “I have a plan, but I am not sure how long it will take to get them replaced.”
Baumann said fans will also notice more involvement with the Cardinal Sports Network — the broadcast home for TVCC Sports and the new radio partner in KCKL 95.9 FM radio.
“We want to stream more games in the future, along with help from KCKL radio,” Baumann said. We would like to do as many things to make Trinity Valley the place that you want to play at, and for people to see our games.”
