Athens — The annual Duck Race benefitting the Rainbow Room of Athens will take place starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Texas Freshwater Fishery Center on Lake Athens.

In addition to racing ducks, decorated ducks, games for kids and a bounce house, this year’s race will feature special guest Rachel Beets, who is gathering shoes to be distributed by the Rainbow Room to children who need them.

“Rachel’s Happy Feet” project is attempting to collect 900 pairs of children’s shoes, and she will be on-hand to receive shoes at the Fishery Center.

Tickets to the Duck Race are available through the Rainbow Room at 903-676-2416 or at the Fishery Center on the day of the race for $5. Sponsor duck packages that include a duck that can be decorated, as well as admission to the race, are available for $50 through the Rainbow Room.

Each $5 ticket is marked with a number. Rubber ducks with corresponding numbers will race in heats beginning at 10 a.m. The top three winners of each heat will win a small denomination gift card and compete in a final race, and the winner will receive a $500 gift card from Walmart.

Sponsor ducks will compete in a separate race, and the winner will receive a silver trophy. Decorated sponsor ducks will be on display at the Fishery Center. Visitors will vote on the “Cutest Quacker” duck for best decoration and also receive a silver trophy.

The Duck Race is the main fundraising project that benefits The Rainbow Room, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that supports Henderson County Child Protective Services by providing clothing, beds, cribs, car seats, items for cleaning and hygiene, toys, and other products needed for abused and/or neglected children.
