Athens — A' ohe  lokomaika' i  i  nele i ke pa na' i means “No Kind Heart Lacks A Reward” in Hawaiian.  That is the theme for this year’s Henderson County United Way campaign.

Don't miss the Hawaiian adventure at the Henderson County United Way campaign kick-off luncheon to be held at the Athens Country Club on Wednesday, Sept. 25. The lunch is scheduled to start at 11:45 a.m.

Henderson County United Way Secretary Mary Waddle said, “The kick-off luncheon is to get the community motivated to make donations to the United Way.”

Waddle said the campaign lasts from September through December, but they accept donations all year long.

The HC United Way website says it best about United Way’s mission:  “The United Way is based on the concept that the community and its residents have a responsibility and a desire to take care of themselves and each other. It is a unified effort of those who give and those who are served, working together for a single cause; to make the community a better place for all of us.

“At the heart of the United Way, our primary interest is people, The strength of the United Way is people. The driving concern of the United Way is people. It is through people and our agencies that we fulfill the United Way vision; by arming our children and youth with character and tools for success; by working to improve the health and human services infrastructure; by fostering economic self-sufficiency in both youth and older adults; by assisting the elderly and disabled with medication, guidance, therapy, service animals and transportation, and by restoring the lives of those who are vulnerable with nowhere else to turn.”

The motivational speaker for this year's luncheon will be David Slaughter. In his book “Major Opportunities,” Slaughter describes working on behalf of a $2.2 million children's charity built in 1957 called “Arms of Hope,” while running a billion-dollar public company.

“I raised in one night intake of a 3-hour dinner from $75,000 to $263,000,” Slaughter said. “We raised the plan of $325,000 over three years to take in $750,000. I can help you do the same. It takes planning, brainstorming and a strong  steering committee. I can teach you the ways to do it by combining your business acumen with volunteers you recruit.”

The HC United Way has set a goal of $185,000. Waddle says there are a number of ways to contribute. One of those ways is on the website. There is a Paypal to use for donation. The website is

She said you can also make a one time donation with a check or have the donations withdrawn from your paycheck. Donations can also be mailed to United Way, P. O. Box 1435, Athens, TX 75751.

“It's important everyone who contributes to United Way knows all money stays in Henderson County,” Waddle said. “We have 21 agencies we help in Henderson County.”

The kick-off luncheon is to motivate  business leaders to get involved with United Way. Anyone interested in attending the luncheon should contact Mary Waddle at 903-670-3324. The cost is $18.
